This Rogue
- Umpqua Scenic Byway - Highway is one of the most beautiful highways Oregon has
to offer, the "All-American Road". Crater Lake and Diamond Lake are only an hour away on Oregon
State Scenic Highway 138. |
What is Umpqua? More than 100 years ago, Oregon pioneers, referring to
the Indians helping them cross raging rivers, thought Umpqua meant
"ferry me across" or "across the waters". When they needed a lift, they
would shout Umpqua! Umpqua! Some historians believe the word means
"rushing waters" or "thunder water," referring to the region's towering
waterfalls and thundering whitewater. Others think that since Native
Americans found such a lush land filled with game and water, that Umpqua
is Indian for "full tummy" or "I am satisfied." Whatever its origin,
modern visitors will be fully satisfied by their experience in the Land
of Umpqua.
Take the drive up the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Highway
to Carter Lake.
